Collection: The Studio X Wood and Salt

These works emerge from the intersection of materiality and memory in an attempt to engage with places of absence and layered with generational memory. Each piece is handcrafted and is a celebration of ritual and the playful interpretation of imperfection.

The Process

Each piece is made from a single piece of responsibly sourced sheesham wood. The wood is turned and formed on a lathe machine sometimes by chance, sometimes by the deliberate movement of the hands. But always from a place of authenticity.

The Flaming

The piece is then flamed allowing the oils along the surface to melt away and reveal the beauty of the grain within. The piece is then washed and allowed to dry. This process allows the wood to alter its geometry and form. Since wood responds differently to the process of flaming no two pieces are identical, only in form and intention.

The Slice

The cracks that begin to reveal themselves are then sanded before a thin slice of pure brass is inserted to bind the cracks. A subtle nod to the stories of repair.
