Our work gives us an opportunity to travel and work closely with indegenous communitiues across India. Our travels allow us access into communities and ideas that have enriched our exploration of design.
On a recent trip to Orissa we were lucky enough to come across these masks used in Ramlila performances. Stories and performances of the Ramayana exist all across the Indian subcontinent all the way to South East Asia.
Used in performances, either as head-gear, props or on chariots, the masks bear all that narrative qualities associated with Vishnu and the story of Rama. Made in around the villages of Bisipida in Orissa, these masks are made from woods such as Paa Ladhuaa, Phassi or Gambhari. They are hand painted, often with natural dyes and pigments.
