Divine Figure

On a recent trip to Orissa we were lucky enough to come across these masks used in Ramlila performances. The story of Rama and his jounrey exist throughout the subcontinent stretching all the way to the edges of South East Asia.

These masks are hand crafted and no two pieces are the same, each artisans adds details and techniques particular to his style. In some lots the imagery of the dancing fish appears while in others a particular leaf appears but all of them bear the design that is so unique to Orissa's rich cultural heritage. These masks are over 40 years old and there are fewer and fewer artisans who make them in quite the same way. These large masks are a celebration of Indias diversity and rich cultural heritage. 

Used in performances, either as head-gear, props or on chariots, the masks bear all the narrative qualities associated with Vishnu and the story of Rama. Made in and around the villages of Bisipida in Orissa, these masks are made from wood such as Paa Ladhuaa, Phassi or Gambhari. They are hand painted, often with natural dyes and pigments.
